Fortuity

Time and again, the harder we try to control our circumstances, the less life seems to cooperate. This uncomfortable disparity between forcing a desired outcome and the inevitability of a situation is worth acknowledging, and doing so often brings a measure of relief. We can fight tirelessly against life’s uncertainties, or we can make room for chance occurrences to surprise us.

This project invites chance to co-author the work. Someone else drove, and I photographed from the passenger window, holding the frame open as the world went by. I chose neither the speed, the route, nor the composition as the scenes passed through my lens. Chance brought a quality I could not have planned.

In turn, the work invites the viewer to consider their own relationship with chance: to let go of the wheel now and then, and make room for fortuity.
